For who have suffered breast cancer and have had their breast removed, the common procedure to reconstruct breasts is by using implants. Advancements in science and technology has unveiled new alternatives for breast cancer patients, which allows patients have more natural breasts. The specialized breast reconstruction procedures are the DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigraphic Perforator) flap procedure and the SIEA flap procedure.

DIEP flap procedure
a. In this procedure the flap skin and tissue from the abdomen is removed and used to reconstruct the breast.
b. Breast reconstruction done by this procedure is superior to implants. The breasts look more natural and there are no problems like pain.
c. Only, women with enough tummy tissue can opt for this procedure.
d. DIEP flap procedure is superior to, TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominus Myocutaneous) flap procedure done for breast reconstruction.

TRAM flap proceduree after surgery leaves women with reduced abdominal strength, back pain and problems like hernias. But, DIEP flap procedure does not have any such problems and is relatively has less post-operative pain.

SIEA (Superficial inferior epigastric arteries and veins ) flap procedure for breast reconstruction
a. In this procedure, different blood vessels named, superficial inferior epigastric arteries and veins are used for breast reconstruction.
b. Much of the procedure is similar to the DIEP procedure.
c. Studies have shown that only 30% of the patients are eligible to undergo this procedure.
