According to some US researchers, silicone breast implants are not harmful and do not cause cancers, connective tissue diseases or other chronic diseases.

This was proved by a review study conducted by researchers from the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md., and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. The review will be published in the November issue of the journal Annals of Plastic Surgery.

Study Highlights
a. Researchers reviewed earlier research on the safety of the implants.
b. More than a dozen studies on the risk of cancer in women with cosmetic breast implants were studied in detail.
c. It was found that hardly any evidence of an increase in breast cancer or any other type of cancer was found.
d. It was also seen that the conclusion of many studies was that there is no link between breast implants and connective tissue diseases like fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
e. It was also found that implants do not cause neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis.
f. The earlier studies showed that children born to women with implants were normal and did not suffer from any birth defects or health problems.
g. Researchers however said that more research is needed on the cause of higher suicide rates among women with implants.
h. Only one study was found to report an increased risk of lung cancer.
