A common problem faced by many patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery is the malabsorption of vitamins, nutrients, certain medications, minerals and dietary supplements. The main cause for the malabsorption of vitamins and nutrients etc is the creation of a bypass of the portion of small intestine.

Recommendations

a. The patient (bariatrc) has to make sure from his doctor whether the medications, vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements will be absorbed after he undergoes gastric bypass surgery.
b. In case absorption has become a problem, go for alternative medication or dosage forms and prefer medications that are in liquid or patch form.
c. A patient after surgery has to take multi-vitamin and calcium supplementation daily in the form of liquid or powder for better absorption.
d. It is better to consider an early bone density testing and monthly B12 injections.
