With the growing demand for gastric bypass surgeries, there are some insurance companies which are extending insurance coverage to patients who wish to undergo gastric bypass surgeries. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMA) has proposed Medicare changes to effective early this year.

Coverage Highlights
a. The coverage will be extended to, many types of weight loss surgeries like gastric banding, Roux-en-Y procedure. Earlier, only gastric by-pass surgery was covered.
b. Patients who are over 65 and above would also be eligible, if certain conditions are met.
c. The coverage would be extended only, if the surgeries are undergone at Centers of Excellence, which have facilities, equipment to perform these surgeries.
d. Some experts argue that restricting the surgeries to Centers of Excellence, may delay surgeries for patients. This is because Centers of Excellence are not in a position to accommodate all the patients willing to undergo bariatic surgery, making patients to wait for a long duration.
