A recent research conducted by the University of Illinois shows that the consumption of soy may aid in weight loss. According to this study, soy affects the body's hormones to degrade lipids and thereby reduce body weight.

The results of the study, which was funded by by the Illinois Soybean Association and SAI Company, was presented at the Experimental Biology meeting in Washington, D.C, recently.

Highlights of soy protein hydrolysates
a. It can help a person lose weight.
b. It has the ability to boost metabolism.
c. Soy peptides interact with receptors in the brain to aid in weight loss.
d. Anorectic peptides in soy induce a feeling of 'fullness' in people.

Highlights of the study
a. Cannulas was implanted in the brains of lab rats.
b. They were then injected with leptin.
c. Once scientists found positive results, they they injected two formulations of hydrolyzed soy protein and soy peptides into the rats.
d. This helped them to monitor the effects of each on food intake and weight loss.
e. The rats, who had unlimited access to food and water at all times and were exercised equally, were injected three times a week for two weeks.
f. Food intake was measured 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours after injection.
g. They were weighed 24 and 48 hours after injection.
h. All the rats were found to have lost weight.
i. After the third injection, significant weight loss was noticed in the animals that had received one of the soy hydrolysates.
j. It was concluded that this was because soy had altered the metabolism of the rats.
