According to a recent study conducted by San Diego-based Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Pramlintide might be able to cure obesity. Researchers are optimistic that this will help obese people lose weight. Manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Pramlintide is at present sold under the name Symlin and is used to treat patients with diabetes.

Major Benefits of Pramlintide
a. It gives people a feeling of satiety so that they eat less.
b. It aids in weight loss by making people binge less.
c. It keeps people off fatty foods.
d. It is a man-made form of the amylin hormone produced by the pancreas.
e. At present, it is sold as Symlin for diabetic patients.
f. It can cause an 8 per cent weight loss in a year.

Study Highlights
a. This was a 6-week study.
b. This hormone was given to 88 obese men and women before each meal.
c. The subjects were told to live normally and follow normal activities.
d. Some of the participants were put on placebo and the rest on the hormone.
e. In these 6 weeks, participants underwent three "fast-food challenges."
f. It was seen that on Day 3, participants on pramlintide were consuming about 750 fewer calories a day than those on placebo.
g. However, it was seen that the pramlintide-placebo calorie intake difference reduced as the patients on the drug lost weight.
h. For the first four days and last three days they were put up in a facility.
i. The rest of the days they were at home and were regularly checked by a doctor.
j. It was seen that participants who were given pramlintide lost an average of 4.5 pounds while the placebo group stayed the same.
