Intense pulsed light:
Purpose: A light source that treats red or brown spots.
Estimated cost: $100 to $400 per treatment; three to five needed.
FDA approved: Yes.

V Beam laser:
Purpose: A laser that treats broken blood vessels.
Estimated cost: $100 to $150 per treatment; number needed depends on severity of problem.
FDA approved: Yes.

Hyaluronic acid injectable fillers, such as Restylane, Hylaform, Captique and Juvéderm:
Purpose: Fillers used to treat wrinkles.
Estimated cost: $500 per treatment; results last six to nine months.
FDA approved: Yes.

Photodynamic therapy using 5-aminolevulinic acid:
Purpose: A light and laser treatment for sun-damaged skin and acne. The 5-aminolevulinic acid shrinks oil glands and gets rid of bacteria that cause acne.
Estimated cost: $300 to $600 per treatment; two to three needed.
FDA approved: Yes.

Silicone filler:
Purpose: Liquid injectable silicone to treat depressed acne scars.
Estimated cost: Depends; minimum $200 for five scars.
FDA approved: It is approved for use for detached retinas in the eye, and has been used off-label for years for acne scars.
